Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students will be able to:
– describe a number of morpho-syntactic aspects of the Russian language, in both Italian and Russian
– apply formal linguistic notions to the specificities of the Russian verb system
– master the Russian verb system more confidently
– recognise the most crucial features of the language used for tourism and commercial purposes

===============

В результате освоения дисциплины, студенты сумеют:
− критично описывать морфо-синтаксические явления русского языка, как на итальянском так и на русском языке
− применять сведения общего языкознания к особенностям русской глагольной системы
− уверенно владеть русской глагольной системой
− идентифицировать главные характеристики русского языка для делового общения

Program

*PROGRAMME*

Part I – GRAMMATICAL THEORY
Following up on the concepts of ‘aspect’ and ‘Aktionsart’ dealt with in the previous course, we will focus on the processes of (a) formation of aspectual pairs, (b) perfectivization with semantic change, and (c) secondary imperfectivization. Using this framework, we will then discuss the formation of aspectual pairs in relation to prefixed motion verbs, with the aim of (i) pointing out the problems of traditional grammatical approaches, and (ii) suggesting a new approach, useful for both learners and teachers of Russian. Finally, we will look at some non-finite verb forms, with particular attention to the participial and gerundial ones.

Part II – TEXT ANALYSIS
We will be reading a number of texts pertaining to the business sphere (e.g. emails to request or provide information, supply goods and services, bargain conditions and prices) in order to emphasise the peculiarities of the Russian language used for business and commercial purposes. Special attention will be given to cross-linguistic comparisons with Italian, first by reading the texts in both languages and then by doing translation exercises in small groups.

Programme and bibliography are the same for both attending and non-attending students.

==================

*ПРОГРАММА*

Examination Methods

Written + Oral.

*PREREQUISITES*
Students can take the exam ONLY IF:
– they have acquired the B2 language certificate
– they have passed the exams “Russian language 1” and “Russian literature 1”

*CONTENTS*
The written part is a test consisting of questions and exercises on the topics of the course. It lasts one and a half hour.
The oral part can be taken only after passing the written one. This part will require students to (a) read a text in business Russian, (b) correct the errors in the written exam, and (c) elaborate on one of the topics of grammatical theory.

*LANGUAGE*
WRITTEN PART:
Grammar exercises and questions are in Russian
ORAL PART:
Conversation in Russian; comments on the written test can be made either in Russian or in Italian.

*ASSESSMENT CRITERIA*
Particular attention in the final evaluation is given to:
– content accuracy and completeness
– knowledge of the subject-specific lexicon
– precision in the discussion of the topics
– critical ability in the argumentation
– originality in establishing connections among the various topics
– active participation in class (for attending students)

Repeating mechanically and mnemonically the contents of the course, logical fallacies in the argumentation, insufficiently mastering the technical terminology will have a negative impact on the evaluation.

*ASSESSMENT METHODS*
(1) The written test is marked in thirties. The total mark is the mean score between the mark of written test and that of the language certificate. Note that the mean score will be calculated only if the mark of the written test is at least 18/30.
(2) Students who pass the written test can (a) take the oral part of the exam, or (b) if unsatisfied with the mark, repeat the test in one of the following exam sessions
(3) The oral part completes the written one, so – depending on the student’s performance – the final mark can be confirmed, increased or reduced.

===============

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE
