Learning objectives

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- apply the basic concepts of phonology to the system of German;
- recognize the most important phonological processes of German;
- describe the most important differences between the phonological systems of German and Italian;
- carry out the phonetic transcription of Standard German words;
- demonstrate awareness of regional and stylistic variation of pronunciation;
- demonstrate to have the German language skills that correspond to the C1 level of the CEFR.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Prerequisites for attending the course: knowledge and skills related to German linguistics acquired during previous years of university study, and sufficient language proficiency to understand lectures taught in German.
Prerequisites for admission to the exam: C1-level language certification (CEFR). Language proficiency is verified on the basis of certification issued by the CLA (University Language Centre) or by other accredited institutions. Students are reminded that, in order to sit any third-year language exam, they must have passed the language and literature exams of the previous years.
Erasmus students are kindly requested to contact the instructor before the start of the course.

Program

Introduction to German Phonetics and Phonology
The course consists of four thematic units.
(1) “Phonetics” introduces the basics of acoustic phonetics and, above all, articulatory phonetics; it discusses the relationship between written and spoken language and includes practice in the phonetic transcription of words in Standard German. The German phonetic system is compared with the Italian one.
(2) “Segmental Phonology” presents basic concepts of the phonological system and then focuses on the rules that operate between underlying structure—i.e. the phonological representations of words stored in the lexicon—and their phonetic realization at the surface level (final devoicing, r-vocalization, etc.).
(3) “Prosodic Phonology” is devoted to phonological constituents and syllable structure.
(4) “Diatopic and Diaphasic Variation” broadens the perspective to include variation in colloquial Standard German resulting from speakers’ geographical origin and the communicative situation.
Note: the course will be taught in German.

Didactic methods

Lectures include theoretical content and practical exercises. For non-attending students and for making up missed classes, teaching materials are available on Moodle. All students are encouraged to clarify any doubts with the instructor during office hours.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam is held in written form (90 minutes) and is the same for attending and non-attending students. It consists of a theoretical section (questions on basic concepts) and a practical section, which includes phonetic transcription, identification of phonological processes, and syllabic analysis of German words—always also in comparison with Italian—as well as the interpretation and discussion of non-standard varieties.
