Learning objectives

On finishing this course, the student will be able: - to identify the principles of terminology, mainly in the French-speaking context; - to acquire the methods and the main IT tools of terminography; - to apply these concepts and instruments in French-Italian translation in the fields of tourism and international business; - to have a language competence in French corresponding to level C1 of the CEFR.

Prerequisites and basic notions

In order to pass the exame it is COMPULSORY to have completed the exams of Language and Literature of the 2nd year.
The oral examination concerns the entire program and can be taken after obtaining C1 level.
The verification of language level is based on the certifications issued by the CLA (Centro Linguistico d'Ateneo) or other institutions recognized by the MIUR (DELF C1, DFP DALF C1, Esabac, please consult the dedicated web page on the CLA website) and is preparatory to the oral examination.

Program

The course illustrates the basic notions of terminology and specialized translation and is divided into three parts. The first part examines some of the main theories of translation and the basic notions of pragmatic translation, with an in-depth analysis of the interlinguistic relations between terms in the translation of specialized texts. The second part of the course examines the terminology, the notion of term and the terminographic practice of the Francophone context, also through the analysis and use of digital resources, such as terminological databases and specialized corpora. The third part will address the topic of terminological neology, illustrating its specificities compared to “spontaneous” neology and presenting some cases of neology in the commercial, tourist, editorial and literary fields.

Didactic methods

The course will be held in French.
The teaching methods include:
• Frontal lessons on the main theoretical notions.
• Examples and case analysis.
• Terminology and translation activities.
The detailed program, all the course materials and any further information will be available on the E-learning platform. The teacher is available to provide further information via email and during the office hours, published on the web page.
RECOVERY METHODS
Missed lessons can be recovered through the materials published on Moodle after each lesson. The teachers are available for any clarifications.
NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS
NON-attending students are required to fully prepare the texts in the bibliography and the readings indicated on Moodle

Learning assessment procedures

The test is oral and takes place entirely in French. The questions will focus on both theoretical concepts and the ability to apply them to practical cases.
ERASMUS students are asked to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course for clarification.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The assessment will take into account the following aspects: - the acquisition of theoretical notions; - the management of practical cases; - the acquisition of methodology; - the clarity of the exposition.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The evaluation is expressed in 30ths. The final grade will be obtained by averaging the linguistic competence grade converted into thirtieths according to the “Normative Handbook for Students of the Foreign Languages and Literatures Area” and the oral exam grade. Prerequisites – linguistic competence required A linguistic competence of level C1 or higher relating to the French language is required. Verification of linguistic competence is based on the certifications issued by the CLA (University Language Centre) or by certification bodies recognised by the MIUR (see, in this regard, the dedicated web page: https://cla.univr.it/files/4-tabella_equipollenze.pdf).
