Learning outcomes

The course aims at focusing on the main principles of pragmatics, with specific reference to speech acts, and the leading role that it plays in authentic communicative exchanges as well as in business English and English for Tourism. Theoretical framework will be supported by single cases taken from written and oral passages. Extracts from promotional tools, such as brochures, leaflets and Internet marketing through websites, will be analysed from a linguistic point of view, specifically connected to pragmatics.
Frontal teaching with class activities and practice will be included during lessons.
At the end of the course, students will be asked to share their knowledge of the main pragmatic theories and of the language of tourism, analysing promotional materials too.

The programme will explore the following aspects:
- Introduction to the concept of pragmatics
- Intercultural pragmatics
- English varieties
- Socio-cultural and situational context
- Cooperative principle
- Politeness
- Speech acts
- Communicative strategies
- Persuasive language
- ESP/ English for Tourism

The present list will be constantly updated. The final version will be available at the end of the course. Materials used during the lessons (slides) will be made available on the Moodle Platform.
The contents of the exam are the same for attending and non-attending students.
Students who are not able to attend lessons are invited to contact the instructor to obtain the password to access the Moodle area.

Examination Methods

Written exam:
Open and closed questions on the topics of the course.

The written test will include a number of questions focusing on the topics covered during the course: multiple choice questions and open-ended questions will be included. The former will evaluate students’ theoretical knowledge; the latter will evaluate students’ ability to apply their knowledge in the analysis of tourim promotional texts. In this specific case, students will be required to identify speech acts, implicatures, conversation maxims and specific linguistic elements of the language of tourism.
During the last class students will have the opportunity to perform a mock exam.

The final grade of the exam will be the average of the grade of the written exam and the grade obtained in the CLA computer test. The latter will be converted into /30 according to the CLA conversion table. Students who have obtained external language certificates should obtain and equivalence certificate from the CLA before the date of the exam.

Prerequisites - In order to access the exam, students need to have passed:
- C1 level of linguistic competence
- English Language 2
- English Literature and Culture 2

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Stage e tirocini

Nel piano didattico della laurea triennale in Lingue per il turismo e il commercio internazionale (L12) è previsto un periodo di stage obbligatorio (CFU 6) in organizzazioni imprenditoriali.

Le attività di stage sono finalizzate a far acquisire allo studente una conoscenza diretta in settori di particolare interesse per l’inserimento nel mondo del lavoro e per l’acquisizione di abilità professionali specifiche.
Le attività di stage sono svolte sotto la diretta responsabilità di un singolo docente presso studi professionali, enti della pubblica amministrazione, aziende accreditate dall’Ateneo veronese.
I crediti maturati in seguito ad attività di stage saranno attribuiti secondo quanto disposto nel dettaglio dal “Regolamento d’Ateneo per il riconoscimento dei crediti maturati negli stage universitari” vigente.
