Learning objectives

The course aims to develop and consolidate their understanding of the pragmatic and multimodal aspects of the promotional text in English, with special focus on the varieties of tourism and commerce. At the end of the course the students should be able to demonstrate a competent use of the tools for analysis of the descriptive and persuasive texts in English. A C1 competence is required for the exam.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Prerequisites: English Language 2, complete C1 level of English Language proficiency (or certificate of equivalence issued by CLA, the Language Center of the University), English Literature 2 (or equivalent exam). As stated in the "Regulatory Handbook for Students in the Foreign Languages and Literatures Area", the validity of the C1 language certification is three years from the date of attainment.

3. Promotional / Advertising Language

By the end of the course, students will be able to identify the key concepts of pragmatics and understand how they apply to English for commerce and tourism; to analyse the pragmatic aspects of English usage in promotional texts and messages; and to apply pragmatic principles to authentic examples of English for commerce and tourism.

Didactic methods

The course consists of lectures supported by slides, as well as activities and exercises carried out during class. Students are expected to complete the assigned activities and participate in class discussions.
The course is delivered in English.

Teaching Support
Students are encouraged to contact the lecturer by email or during office hours for support, particularly in order to make up for missed classes.

Non-attending students are also invited to contact the lecturer.

Learning assessment procedures

Written test (in English)
Duration: 1 hour.
The test will cover the topics discussed during the course and will include multiple-choice questions as well as open-ended questions.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The evaluation of the final exam is based on the score obtained on the test. The final score is the average between the score of the language proficiency certificate (C1) and the score of the exam. Active participation in the activities proposed during the course is essential for adequate preparation for the final exam.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade is the arithmetic average between the outcome of the exam (out of thirty) and the English language C1 level certification (or its equivalent) obtained at the CLA (out of thirty according to the current table)
