Learning objectives

Acquisition of basic notions concerning the main social and cultural phenomena that have taken place in China in the last decades with a focus on the relationship between tradition and modernity. Through individual or group works, students will acquire skills in research methodologies and they will develop a critical approach.

Prerequisites and basic notions

There are no prerequisites for attending classes.
To take the exam, you must have passed Chinese Language 1 and Chinese Literature and Culture 1.

Program

The course will focus on some issues about social changes in China over recent decades that will be discussed through the analysis of the relationship between society and power and the role of the institutions. Students will participate in the debate through in-depth analysis on specific topics of particular interest useful to trace an overview of contemporary Chinese society (media, environment, politics, to name but a few).

Learning assessment procedures

Written examination (multiple choice and open-ended questions).

Evaluation criteria

The examination aims at determining the acquisition of the socio-cultural knowledge required, the analysis of the readings in the syllabus and the ability to argue and analyse critically on the basis of the skills acquired during the course.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

Grades are measured in thirtieths. The exam is passed with a score of 18/30 or higher.
