L-FIL-LET/13 - PHILOLOGY OF ITALIAN LITERATURE

Learning outcomes
Knowledge of philology's specific concepts and terms; knowledge of the main methods and purposes of various types of critical edition, with particular regard to the Lachmanian method; ability to read a critical edition.
Program
1. Methods of critical edition; emendatio and recensio; critical and diplomatic edition; archetype and stemma codicum; type of errors; contamination; critical apparatus.
2. Authorial philology and authorial variants.
3. Different publishing methods, with particular regard to Lachmann's method and Bedier's criticisms.
The methodological questions will be explored by discussing examples from Italian literary texts (from the Origins to the Twentieth Century) and through practical exercises (reading codes or prints, analysis of editions and critical apparatus).

The exam will be taken as a viva.
