Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide the basic concepts of the theoretical linguistics and particularly refers to the synchronic approach for the analysis of natural languages.
Program
The course introduces the fundamental concepts of theoretical Linguistics (the difference between Language as a human capacity and natural languages) and the essential features of human Language. It describes the possible classifications of natural languages (language families, language typology, areal Linguistics etc.).
The course also provides basic notions of phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics, and the related tools for the linguistic analysis (IPA, models for the interpretation of linguistic change).

Examination Methods
Oral examination, preceded by a written test, consisting of a multiple choice test and open-ended questions in order to assess theoretical knowledge acquired by the students during the course, as well as their ability to apply this knowledge to concrete cases of linguistic analysis. The positive overcoming of the written exam gives admission to the oral exam.
