Learning outcomes

This course aims at introducing the student to the procedures of multimodal analysis and their application to narratives of travel and to intercultural translation of contemporary textual production in English.

Program

From the book Introduction to multimodal analysis by David Machin, the following topics are to be studied thoroughly: VISUAL GRAMMAR AND THE MEANING OF METAPHORICAL ASSOCIATION, FROM LEXIS TO GRAMMAR, DISCOURSE, MULTIMODALITY AS A BROADER CHANGE IN THE WAY WE COMMUNICATE IN SOCIETY, MODALITY: CONCEALING AND EXAGGERATION IN IMAGES, A SEMIOTIC APPROACH: DENOTATION AND CONNOTATION, CARRIER OF CONNOTATION, THE ORIGIN OF MODALITY AS A LINGUISTIC CONCEPT, MODALITY MARKERS, COMMUNICATIVE FUNCTION OF COLOR, KINDS OF VISUAL MODALITY, THE REPRESENTATION OF SOCIAL ACTORS IN THE IMAGE, CARRIERS OF MEANING, COMPOSITION AND PAGE LAYOUT, BASIC PRINCIPLES OF SALIENCE, FOUR KINDS OF COMPOSITION, GIVEN AND NEW, IDEAL AND REAL, CENTRE AND MARGIN, EMBEDDED STRUCTURES, FRAMING, COMPOSITIONAL STRUCTURES.
