Learning objectives

The course aims at introducing the students to the most important periods and trends of German 19th Century literature: Classic and Romantic literature, “Vormärz”, “Biedermeier”, Realism. At the end of the course students will possess a thourough knowledege of the topics we dealt with during the lessons, with both regard to historical and aesthetic aspects of the texts. Moreover they will be able to read and analyse the texts in German and explain their knowledge in proper German speech.

Program

Starting with Goethe, the first part of the course will address the relationship between Classicism and Romanticism (invoking Schiller on the one hand and Kleist and Byron on the other). The course will then examine the phases of the Young Germany and the Early German Period (with authors such as Heinrich Heine and Georg Büchner)—in contrast to the so-called Biedermeyer period (represented by Franz Grillparzer and Adalbert Stifter). Finally, some leading figures of Realism, such as Conrad Ferdinand Meyer and Theodor Fontane, will be analyzed.
