Learning objectives
The course completes the three-year path aimed at acquiring the basics of Russian literary and cultural history. It is therefore linked to courses held in the preceding years complementing them and undertaking in-depth examination of topics related to Russian works and movements. At the end of the course students will be able to: 1) identify the main dynamics of modern and contemporary Russian historical and literary processes; 2) carry out a textual and comparative analysis using the acquired knowledge; 3) express autonomous and coherent opinions about outstanding moments of Russian cultural and historical development and analyse them properly.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Students can take the exam only once passed the exams “Russian language 2” AND “Russian literature 2”.

Russian culture and literature through the prism of music and theatre:
- historical and historiographical framework
- theatrical institutions and practices
- Classicism and the influence of French and Italian theatre
- sentimentalism and Komicheskaya opera
- romanticism, nationalism, and aesthetics
- symbolism and theatricality
- experiments of the early 20th century (revolutionary agitation theatre, futurism, Oberiu)
- Soviet theatrical academism: the new classicism of socialist realism

Frontal classes, enriched with audio-video examples; reading of fragments in Russian.
Learning assessment procedures
Oral conversation. Questions will cover concepts and topics analyzed during the classes and included in the program.
Students will be also asked to analyze the texts proposed during the classes.
Evaluation criteria
- content accuracy and completeness in terms of contents
- adequate analysis abilities
- clarity in the exposition, argumentative ability
- mastery of the subject-specific vocabulary.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The final grade is out of 30.
It will consist of the average between open questions and textual analysis.
