Learning objectives

At the end of the course, the student will need to demonstrate to have acquired the main interdisciplinary foundations of Romance Philology (historical linguistics, textual criticism and medieval Romance literature).

Prerequisites and basic notions

There are no prerequisites, except for an interest and curiosity in the subject matter. Even a basic knowledge of Latin, while not strictly necessary, can be helpful for a more immediate understanding of the topics.

Program

The course is divided into three parts. (1) Presentation of the main lines of textual criticism, both on a theoretical level and through the observation of some concrete cases. (2) Introduction to the basic notions of Romance linguistics in its diachronic dimension, starting from the common Latin matrix, the so-called Vulgar Latin, insisting particularly on the phonetic, morphological and lexical aspects. (3) Reading and analysis of some texts particularly representative of the Romance literatures of the Middle Ages.

Evaluation criteria

The candidate's critical, linguistic, literary, and philological knowledge will be assessed through both general questions and the reading and analysis of one or more texts from among those read and commented on during the course, or from the bibliography. The candidate will be asked to read from a photocopy or volume provided by the examiner. Preparation will be considered adequate (with a grade expressed out of 30) if the candidate demonstrates: knowledge, understanding, and ability to apply the topics covered; presentation skills, with mastery of vocabulary (both specialized and non-specialized) and independent organization of arguments; and definitional ability. The final grade is expressed out of 30. Achieving a comprehensive understanding of the topics covered in class, combined with good critical thinking, expressive skill, and command of specific language will be assessed with very good or excellent grades (28-30 cum laude). Predominantly mnemonic or not well-developed acquisition of course content and not always adequate linguistic and logical skills will be assessed with a grade from fair (21-24) to good (25-27). A minimum level of knowledge of the course content, combined with training gaps or inadequate linguistic and logical skills, will lead to a passing grade (18-20). The absence of a minimum level of knowledge of the course content, combined with inadequate linguistic and logical skills and training gaps, will produce a failing grade (<18/30).
