Learning outcomes
Knowledge of the most important landmarks in the history of cinema, with attention to the Hollywood and European context, and acquisition of a method of analysis of the film. The student must be able to place a film in its historical-cultural context demonstrating not only historical, linguistic and theoretical knowledge, but also the ability to process this knowledge in a well-argued synthesis. At the end of the course students will be expected to have acquired a capacity to analyze the form and content of film texts and to demonstrate an understanding of traditions of filmmaking in different national and international contexts.
Program
The course aims to offer a broad overview of the evolution of the cinematographic language from its origins to the present day, with particular attention to the influence that new technologies and digital platforms have had in the production, distribution and reception systems of audiovisual texts. After an introduction to the main junctions in the history of cinema (the avant-garde silent films, classic Hollywood, neorealism, modern cinema, contemporary cinema), the course will focus on the issue of divism and the communication strategies implemented by contemporary stars on social networks. Some case studies such as Scarlett Johansson, Marilyn Monroe, Pierfrancesco Favino, etc. will be analyzed.
