Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide the tools to interpret the evolution, meaning and function of fashion, as represented in the figurative arts. At the end of the course, the student must be able to recognize the chronological and geographic scope, the main elements of clothing and the related terminology, the social and eventually symbolic value assigned to clothes and accessories; the student must demonstrate the ability to use the main written and iconographic sources on the topic as an aid to the mentioned reading process.
Program
The course aims at providing the fundamental tools for understanding the development of fashion from the Renaissance to the XXth century.
The course will describe types and models following their chronology and their geographic origin. Fashion will be discussed as a response to the cultural values of each period and each country, with a special focus on the fundamental steps that have punctuated its development since the Modern Age.
The course's goal is to provide students with basic tools for recognising the main cultural and social structures of fashion; recognising the most relevant moments, consumers, producers, models with a critical judgement; making use of the appropriate sources.
Students are frequently encouraged to verify the liabilty of the theoretical statements they have learnt from the teacher (images and texts will be discussed during the lessons and the images will be loaded on the e-learning website); furthermore, students are encouraged to express their opinions on specific problems concerning a period, a specific style, a peculiar model, so that they can develop their skills in analysing and giving their personal judgement.
1. The birth of fashion and its development during the Renaissance and the XVIIth century.
2. The hegemony of the French fashion from the XVIIIth to the XXth century.
3. The birth of the Italian Fashion in the XXth century.
4. Recent trends in the international fashion.
