Learning objectives

The course aims to provide the knowledge of the crucial phases of the history of the contemporary world for the period 1914-1989. Particular attention is dedicated to the study of the political, cultural and social relations that characterized the relationship between Europe and the most developed areas of the world in the last century, taking into account both the changes introduced by the processes of globalization of the economy and the changes that took place in terms of international relations. At the end of the course the student must be able to: a) know the most relevant periodizations and events related to the indicated historical period, b) critically confront the fundamental problems of global history, c) use the different historiographic interpretations in an appropriate manner.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Basic knowledge (school level) of the fundamental features of the history of the Twentieth Century.

Program

The course will retrace the main stages of the political history of the Twentieth Century, adopting a perspective as global as possible. The lectures will highlight, among other things, the evolution of political communication over the century and in relation to international changes.
Main topics of the course:
- The long agony of traditional empires
- The end of European centrality and attempts to reinvent it
- The rise of dictatorial regimes between the two world wars
- Successes and failures of institutions for collective security
- Antagonism geopolitical and ideological Cold War
- The roots of the new "globalization": between old and new inequalities
- Birth and fall of "new empires"?

Didactic methods

Frontal lessons. The synthetic material shown during the lessons will be made available to students.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam is written, consisting of four open-ended questions: three on various topics in the manual, one on the book of your choice. The exam lasts two and a half hours.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The assessment will reward the synthesis, the correct understanding of the questions, and the ability to combine in the answers what has been learned in the manual and during the lessons.
Each answer will be given a maximum grade of 7.5 points, for a total of 30 for the entire exam.
