Learning objectives

This course aims to introduce the framework of industrial and organizational (I/O) psychology as a field of study and of intervention. In particular, it focuses on the relationships between interpersonal interactions (individual differences and not), job characteristics and organizational variables. At the end of the course, the student should be able to recognize constructs such as Work Engagement and Burnout, apply organizational models such as Job Demands-Resources and Demand-Control, and evaluate behaviors such as Job crafting and Counterproductive Work Behavior. Regarding the application of the subject of study, the student should be able to understand and solve interactive cases based on empirical evidence in the field of occupational psychology.

Program

The course explores in an integrated way the foundations of work psychology and the skills needed for effective, ethical and socially useful scientific communication. The first part introduces the main theoretical models and constructs of work and organizational psychology: motivation, satisfaction, work well-being, engagement, stress, job crafting, leadership and organizational culture. The second part is dedicated to scientific communication: students will learn to identify, select and evaluate reliable scientific sources, using academic databases (e.g. Scopus, PsycINFO, Web of Science) and understanding the difference between peer-reviewed literature and non-validated content. We will work on translating research results into clear, correct and usable popular content for non-specialist audiences (managers, workers, media, citizens). A central focus will be on the conscious use of artificial intelligence in scientific communication: students will experiment with AI tools to analyze texts, summarize articles and generate popular content (e.g. short articles, infographics, posts, podcasts), critically reflecting on the ethical implications, the reliability of the results and the need for human validation.

Didactic methods

The training program includes a combination of traditional lectures and practical moments in the laboratory. The sessions will be held mainly in the classroom, with the option of using the Zoom platform to facilitate the exchange of materials. Students will be involved in exercises aimed at developing critical skills in the analysis of sources, in the creation of informative content and in the simulation of professional communication scenarios. Particular emphasis will also be placed on the use of digital technologies for editorial production, such as collaborative writing software and tools for creating infographics and short-term multimedia content. The use of artificial intelligence tools will be integrated into the program, with a guided and reflective approach on the ethical and practical implications of these technologies. The entire teaching method aims to stimulate the direct involvement of students, promoting the practical application of knowledge and the development of transversal skills consistent with the training objectives of the course.

Learning assessment procedures

For those attending the course, assessment of learning outcomes will include an oral exam based on the preparation and presentation of a written paper, to be submitted following the guidelines available on Moodle. For non-attending students, the exam will consist of an oral exam based on the indicated textbooks and the material uploaded to Moodle.

Evaluation criteria

The exam work will be assessed based on: relevance to the assignment, organization of the topics covered including logic and coherence, clarity and correctness of the presentation, and a well-developed vocabulary rich in technical terms.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade will be assigned by evaluating the following aspects of the thesis and the related oral presentation. For Erasmus and international students: English (subject to prior agreement with the instructor)
