Learning objectives

The course deals with the main features of the transmission of Latin literary texts during the Antiquity and the Middle Ages up to the invention of the printing press and with the technical setup of a critical edition, through the philological study of a classical Latin text, with a specific focus on textual criticism, manuscript tradition, and main critical methods for the study of its composition and its linguistic and literary features. Prerequisites Basic knowledge of the transmission of Latin texts during the Antiquity and the Middle Ages and of the general principles of textual criticism. Expected learning outcomes At the end of the course the student should be able: - to know the history of the transmission of the proposed texts and the most important related critical studies; - to translate and to examine the proposed texts as case studies, in relation to their manuscript tradition and reception; - to read and examine the critical apparatus, in relation with the main editorial and textual problems; - to develop autonomous skills for text understanding and explaining; - to develop communication skills related to the technical philological and literary terminology, with awareness of the linguistic, literary and cultural codes identified through interpretation and translation of the proposed texts; - to develop an autonomous critical thought about the employed methodology.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Basic knowledge of the mechanisms of the transmission of Latin texts in ancient and medieval times and of the general principles of text criticism.

Program

The course aims to address the problems of manuscript tradition and constitution of the text of Virgil's Aeneid, through the philological, textual and historical-literary reading and analysis of Book II.
In particular, the following will be examined
- the origin of the tradition of the Aeneid: the edition of Vario
- the codices vergiliani antiquiores
- the dissemination of Virgil's text in the early Middle Ages
- Virgilian editions from the princeps to modern editions
The course will be preceded by some introductory lessons on the transmission of Latin texts, on the formation of the modern philological method and on textual criticism; for this introductory part some manuals are suggested, whose study is not compulsory but only recommended:

NB It is compulsory to pass the written translation test from Latin before registering any exam in the sector LATI-01/A (formerly L-FIL-LET/04: Latin literature, Latin Philology, Latin Grammar, History of the Latin Language) which allows to reach the total of 24 credits in the sector necessary for access to teaching in the current ministerial classes A-11 (formerly A / 51) and A-13 (formerly A / 52). This written test is preparatory to the aforementioned exam and therefore does not give rise to credits. Starting from the academic year 2019/20 for students of the LM39-Linguistics it is mandatory to pass the above test before registering any exam of LATI-01/A (formerly L-FIL-LET/04) that allows to reach the total of 18 credits in the sector necessary for access to teaching in the current ministerial class A-11 (formerly A / 51).
Students interested in taking the exam as a SINGLE COURSE must contact the teacher before enrolling in the course to assess the presence of the prerequisites and the consequent possibility of supplementary readings. If passing this exam allows you to accumulate, together with the exams already passed in your previous university career, a total of 24 credits in the LATI-01/A (formerly L-FIL-LET/04) sector, you will first need to pass a written translation test from Latin. This written test, compulsory for those who obtain the 24 credits in the sector necessary for access to teaching in the current ministerial classes A-11 (ex A/51) and A-13 (ex A/52), is preparatory to the exam and therefore does not give rise to credits. Starting from the a.y. 2019/20 for students of the LM39-Linguistics it is mandatory to pass the aforementioned test before registering for any LATI-01/A (formerly L-FIL-LET/04) exam which allows to reach the total of 18 credits in the sector necessary for access to teaching in the current class A-11 (ex A/51).

Didactic methods

The lectures will be accompanied, where possible, by seminar-type activities, functional to the active involvement and development of the students' critical autonomy, aimed at opening spaces for discussion and comparison.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam consists of an interview aimed at verifying the degree of knowledge - of the history of Virgil's text and of the main approaches of the studies dedicated to it; - autonomous ability to understand, translate and interpret the text of the Aeneid from a historical, philological and linguistic point of view, with reading and analysis of the critical apparatus; - ability to express the contents of the volume of essays in the program with properties of language and discuss with autonomy of judgment. Attendance at the course is not compulsory but is highly recommended due to the specialized nature of the teaching, especially for students who have not previously taken Philology exams; students who cannot attend are therefore invited to contact the teacher to verify their previous knowledge of the history of the tradition of Latin texts and of philological and text-critical methodology.
N.B. Students who intend to compete for the teaching certificate in classes A-11 (Literary Disciplines and Latin) and A-13 (Literary Disciplines, Latin and Greek) must acquire at least 24 CFUs in the sector LATI-01/A (formerly L-FIL-LET/04). For these students, it is mandatory to pass the written test of translation from Latin, prior to the registration of the exam that allows them to reach 24 CFU in the sector LATI-01/A (formerly L-FIL-LET/04). This written test is preparatory to the aforementioned exam and therefore does not result in credit. Students are requested to bring to the oral examination the certificate of passing the written test or a printout of the three-year and master's degree booklets.
Therefore, those who have not yet earned a total of 18 CFUs in the sector LATI-01/A (formerly L-FIL-LET/04) (calculating the entire university career held until then) are not obliged to take the Latin written test; those who have already earned 18 CFUs (again calculating all Latin exams recorded in the entire university career) must take the Latin written test before the exam that will allow them to earn 24 CFUs in the area.
As of Academic Year 2019/20, LM39-Linguistics students are required to have 18 CFUs in LATI-01/A (formerly L-FIL-LET/04) in order to enter the teaching qualification in Class A11. Therefore, it is mandatory for LM39 students to pass the aforementioned Latin translation test prior to the registration of any LATI-01/A (formerly L-FIL-LET/04) exam to arrive at the total of 18 CFUs in LATI-01/A (formerly L-FIL-LET/04) that are a requirement for access to teaching in class A-11.
Therefore, students enrolled in this master's degree should only take the written Latin exam if they have already taken two oral Latin exams in their entire undergraduate career and have already earned 12 total CFUs.
Students interested in taking the exam as a SINGLE COURSE should contact the teacher before registering for the course to assess the presence of prerequisites and the consequent possibility of supplementary readings. In case the passing of this exam allows to accumulate, together with the exams already passed in the previous university career, a total of 24 CFUs in the sector LATI-01/A (formerly L-FIL-LET/04), the passing of a written test of translation from Latin is preliminarily required. This written test, which is compulsory for those who earn the 24 credits in the field required for access to teaching in the current ministerial classes A-11 (formerly A/51) and A-13 (formerly A/52), is preparatory to the aforementioned exam and therefore does not give rise to credit. Evaluation criteria

The evaluation of the exam will be conducted according to the following criteria: 1) in-depth knowledge of the scheduled bibliography 2) clarity and completeness of the presentation 3) correct metrical reading of Latin text 4) correct in the Italian translation of the scheduled texts 5) ability to analyze and comment on the texts in the program.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade is expressed out of thirty (min.18 to pass the exam) and is composed as follows: 60% ability to translate and comment on the Latin texts in the program 40% knowledge of secondary bibliography
