Learning objectives
The course aims to offer a knowledge of formal structures of Italian literature, with particular attention to poetic metric, and to encourage the ability to autonomously analyze texts. Specific targets: 1) provide a methodical approach to the metric system of Italian, in its different components; 2) conduct a detailed analysis of one metric genre, which shows the relations with the other elements of style as a system (language, argumentative processes, discursive setting). By the end of the course, students should be able to apply the acquired knowledge, and to autonomously carry out an analysis of the formal features of an Italian poetic text, as an essential element for its general interpretation.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Knowledge of the history of the Italian language from its origins to modernity. General skills related to Italian linguistics and Italian literature.
Program
The course will be divided into two thematic areas:
1) description of the Italian metric system (22 hours), and specifically the following topics:
- Metrics and rhythm.
- The verse: syllabic measure and rhythmic structure.
- The rhyme.
- The stanza.
- Italian metrical genres.
2) analysis of the sonnet from its origins to the sixteenth century (14 hours), focusing on the following points:
- metrical structure.
- origin and history of the form.
- function in the overall metrical system.
- relations of meter to other elements of poetic discourse (syntax, textuality and rhetorics).
Bibliography
Didactic methods
With regard to attending students, the teaching methods will consist of lectures devoted to the two subject areas of the course. For both one and the other, constant attention will be paid to the formal interpretation of texts, understood as the starting and ending point of the analytical process. Active student intervention will be encouraged in the classroom, giving students the opportunity to test their acquired knowledge through metrical analysis tests.
The e-learning platform (Moodle) is used for active communication between lecturer and students, regarding bibliography, study topics, and any changes in class or reception times.
In addition, throughout the academic year, the individual reception service run by the lecturer is available at the times indicated on his personal web page and constantly updated.
With regard to non-attending students, the teaching arrangements consist of the lecturer's support for up-to-date textbook study. Any further updates will be made available to the student in a timely manner through the e-learning platform.
At the end of the course, the lecturer will post on the e-learning platform the analytical list of all topics that will be covered in the examination and will specify in detail how to study the bibliography on the syllabus.
Learning assessment procedures
For all students, attending and nonattending, the assessment of learning outcomes involves an oral test.
The test covers all the topics of the program and is divided into two parts, reflecting the two thematic areas of the program:
- assessment of the ability to recognize a metrical form and analyze it in its internal components, particularly in its rhyme-syllabic pattern and rhythmic treatment of at least one of its lines.
- verification of the knowledge acquired about the sonnet and in particular the ability to place its achievements historically and to analyze some exemplary cases of it.
For Erasmus students, the lecturer will clarify in class the content and mode of the test.
Evaluation criteria
Objectives of the exam:
- to verify analytical knowledge of the program topics.
- To verify the ability to reflect and elaborate in relation to some problematic points.
- To verify the operational skills acquired in the formal analysis of poetic texts.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
maximum of 15 thirtieths will be awarded for each of the two parts of the test.
The sum of the score of the two assessments will form the final grade, expressed in thirtieths.
