Learning objectives

Teaching comparative literature aims at transmitting to the students crucial conceptual intruments and modes of thoughts concerning some important literary themes current in the Western World. By the end of the course the student will master notions and critical methodologies used by the professor in class.

Program

Reading the reader. Studying the reading
The course will focus on the figure of the reader, both as a character in literary texts and as a subject of study in literary theory.
The close analysis of five texts will be accompanied by the investigation of issues such as narrative immersion, literary evaluation, and the social role of reading, with insights into phenomena such as digital social reading. Pivotal node of the course will be the context of "reader-response studies", which focus on the figure of the reader and his or her emotional reactions to the text, using experimental approaches and mixed methods (qualitative/quantitative).

Didactic methods

The teaching methods involve face-to-face lectures, to be held on two days per week for a total load of 36 hours (6 CFUs). During lectures, students will be encouraged to participate actively through seminars and experimental activities. Non-attending students will need to agree on a program with some variation to facilitate individual study.

Learning assessment procedures

For attending students, the exam will be divided into two parts. The first part will consist of an interview on the course topics. The second part will consist of an assessment of in-class interaction (participation in experiments and seminar discussions). For non-attending students, the exam will consist entirely of an interview on the course topics.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

During the in-class activities and at the final oral exam, students will have to show that they have gained critical skills during the course, by means of analytical and argumentative ability to link the various theoretical and methodological frameworks in the interpretation of literary texts. Students must also speak with appropriate language.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

Attending students: in-class activity evaluation + final interview evaluation
Non-attending students: evaluation of the final interview
