Learning outcomes

The course is dedicated to the study of some central themes of the history of reli-gions, such as the relationship between the sacred and the symbol, with respect to Christianity, as well as to various religious expressions. In this way, it will be pos-sible to obtain the essential references in order to develop an independent position in the field of the history of religion studies and acquire a critical capacity which may be enough to allow further studies and the application of one's own knowledge to the reference areas of the current debate.

Program

The symbols by which the religious experience is nourished constitute a constant that allows a transversal reading that is extremely significant from the historical-religious point of view. The course starts from the phenomenological investiga-tions of Mircea Eliade and then it increasingly deepens the specificity of the Chris-tian liturgy, by means of Romano Guardini’s thought, in harmony with and in op-position to the symbolic universe of the different kinds of religion.

Examination Methods

Didactic Methods

The teaching methods consist of traditional lectures dedicated to the introduction to the historical-religious debate on the relationship between the sacred and its symbolic expressions and to the examination of the works of two key figures on this theme, namely Eliade and Guardini. In this way, the basic notions of historical-religious research will be thoroughly studied and students will be able to investi-gate autonomously the individual points of particular interest.
Each lesson will be recorded in WMA format and, together with all the material an-alysed during the course, will be punctually uploaded on the e-learning platform of the University website with the aim of easing the study for both attending students and those who can not attend lectures.
During the academic year, an individual consultation service is also available at the teacher's study, at the times indicated on the web pages and readily updated.

Examination arrangements

The assessment of the learning outcomes of the fundamental notions and the re-lated issues will be carried out by means of an oral examination concerning the program carried out. This examination will consist of questions to test the stu-dents' critical-argumentative ability, conceptual clarity and the acquisition of an adequate vocabulary in the field of historical-religious studies. The student is also required to submit a brief report on the subject or text of his choice concerning the program, for up to six folders (maximum 15,000 spaces including spaces), which will be discussed during the examination. The grades are expressed in thirtieths. The examination is the same for both attending students and non-attending ones.
