Learning outcomes
Philosophy of Art and Music The course aims to deepen the knowledge (conceptual, methodological and cultural tools, interpretative theories and artistic practices, learned during the Bachelor degree course) in order to refine their application skills (analyze and interpret the works of art, knowing how to read their texture, insert them in specific areas and cultural and historical environments). The course aims to make people understand the conceptual logics and structures, developing the ability to use a precise and adequate language; moreover, it aims to give the student the skills to confront the art world so that he can independently form a critical judgment and be able to express it in an appropriate language.
Program
Title:
Romantic Irony and Critical Philosophy of Arts
Hegel, Solger, Benjamin
1. The metaphor of a "death of art", commonly attributed to Hegel, or, more precisely, the fact that art would be a definitely past phenomenon, that would no longer have a right to live, not only forces our contemporaries, but already the contemporaries of Hegel to cope with an inescapable problem: the more modernity tries to expel the art the more it feels its need. The German Romantics tried to put this problem and, sometimes, even to give answers.
2. During the course we will try to illuminate this issue by focusing in particular on the concept of irony as it has been worked out by Solger an as it is used by Benjamin in order to build up an interpretation of German Romanticism no longer dominated by the Hegelian verdict.

- Markus Ophälders, Dialettica dell'Ironia romantica, Mimesis, Milano 2016, pp. 11-86 e 94-134.
For further studies:
- Peter Szondi, Poetica e Filosofia della Storia, a cura di Roberto Gilodi e Federico Vercellone, Einaudi, Torino 2001, pp. 179-381.
- Paolo D'Angelo, L'Estetica del Romanticismo, il Mulino, Bologna 1997.
DIDACTIC MODES
The didactic methods adopted are not distinct between attending and non-attending students. They consist of frontal lessons and collective discussions devoted to the transmission and critical examination of concepts and structures of thinking and reflection and their respective application tools to implement theoretical notions in the direction of autonomous critical judgment.
Throughout the academic year, the teacher also holds a regular individual Reception at the times indicated on his page (without having to set a specific appointment). However, it is recommended that you consult the messages to be informed of any changes. During the first lesson, attending students will receive the full lesson schedule with the dates and topics discussed. Information on timetables and classrooms is also provided.
The content of books and lessons is adhering to the program.

Examination Methods
ASSESSMENT METHODS AND CRITERIA
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and in accordance with the University of Verona guidelines, during the 2020 summer session the assessment modality will be modified as follows: online oral exam.
The assessment of the learning outcomes involves an oral test, during which the issues discussed during the course and studied in the texts will be developed. The exam aims at ensuring knowledge of the topics under discussion and the ability to apply the concepts and logical methodologies to the various issues proposed.
This indivisible oral test is about the whole program; it consists of an interview with the teacher and tries to verify:
- the depth and breadth of the knowledge gained;
- the property of language;
- the ability to systematically connect knowledge;
- analytical and argumentative ability.
The vote is expressed in marks from 18 to 30/30.
ERASMUS students are requested to contact the teacher at the beginning of the courses to agree together the teaching methods and the assessment tests.
