Learning outcomes
This course is intended to introduce the participants to the core properties of the semiotic processes that characterize human language as well as other cognitive systems. Theories of the ways in which meaning is produced and manifests itself in language and cognition constitute an essential ingredient of the academic skills and expertise of future communication experts.
Foreseen results:
- An adequate knowledge of (i) the interface between semiotic and cognitive processes; (ii) the notions of language/mind; (iii) some formal analyses of language use in communication/discourse contexts, based on neo-Gricean and post-Gricean theories of 'implicated' meaning
- The ability to analyze and master the linguistic, textual and cultural processes that represent the foundation of meaning and the interpretation of signs
Program
This course will consists in three distinct parts:
(i) Formal properties of the semiotic processes, based on the results of the scientific investigation of mind, consciousness, language and communication in cognitive neuroscience and human sciences,
(ii) Cognitive and social determinants of the pragmatic aspects of linguistic meaning;
(iii) Some textual applications: the free will from an interdisciplinary perspective, with an analysis of some literary texts.
Part (i) and part (ii) will be mainly based on frontal teaching and seminarial discussions. Part (iii) will involve the presentation of some 'case studies' in which the participants will be directly involved in terms of systematic student/teacher interaction methods
Author | Title | Publishing house | Year | ISBN | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Betty J. Birner | Introduction to Pragmatics | Wiley-Blackwell | 2013 | ||
Ugo Volli | Manuale di semiotica | Editori Laterza | 2005 |
Examination Methods
The exam will have an oral form (possibly via zoom/skype, depending on the Covid-19 emergency) and will consist in answering questions intended to check whether the participants show an adequate comprehension of the notions and of the methods of analysis presented and discussed during the course, as well as adequate skills in applying the main techniques of semiotic analysis in the interpretation of written texts and fragments of communication.
