Learning objectives
The aim of the course is to make students aware of the fundamental concepts of the sociology of mass communications and the sociological reflection on the main mass-medium.
Prerequisites and basic notions
No specific prerequisite is required.
Program
• Defining journalism: epistemological limits and pathways of analysis.
• The journalist as "gatekeeper": from theory (David Manning White) to the changes brought about by the digital revolution.
• Communication vs. journalism: definitions, differences, roles.
• Media and information literacy (MIL).
• Monographic analyses: covering elections; local and hyperlocal journalism; sports journalism as a social player; journalism and technology; solutions journalism.
Bibliography
Didactic methods
The lessons will be held face-to-face on campus. Frontal teaching for the presentation of the various topics, constantly complemented by inclusive teaching methods to enhance the student’s dialectical ability and critical thinking skills (Socratic method). Analysis of case studies, best practices, scientific studies and strategic institutional documents related to the topics addressed by the course.
Learning assessment procedures
The exam will consist of tests and projects related to the role of journalism in society. Those attending will have the opportunity to earn an additional score from the work carried out and/or presented in the classroom, which will contribute to the final grade. The exam procedures are explained in a dedicated file on Moodle.
Evaluation criteria
The exam aims to verify students' knowledge of the course topics as well as their critical thinking skills and creativity.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The evaluation is expressed out of 30.
