Learning objectives

The course aims to present the theories and to provide the tools for the study of the relationship between performing arts and media, that is to say the technologies used to construct, fix, transmit, enjoy and comment one single performance or more and all its various components from the antiquity to the digital age. At the end of the course the students will be able to understand the many possible interactions between media and performing arts; analyse the cultural, social, and ideological aspects underneath them; compose on their own short written papers on a piece of performance; acquire the ability to improve their knowledge in time.

Prerequisites and basic notions

General knowledge of the specific characteristics of theatrical language (dramaturgy and staging) and its evolution over time.

Program

The course aims at analyzing, from different points of view, the song as a performance, with reference not only to the vocal performance, but also to the role and meaning that the body of the singer plays in the interpretation of the song : gestures, expressiveness, rhythm, clothing, relationship with space, relationship with the microphone and instruments, relationship with the lights and possible scenography, relationship with the public, reference to a wider context (festival, concert, TV show).
The analysis will be divided into 3 parts, each with its own focus: 1) the evolution of the performative aspect of Italian song from the 1950s to today, drawing as the main source from television programs and in particular from the Sanremo Festival; 2) the characterizing aspects of that particular kind of song which explicitly and consciously assumes a theatrical dimension, from cabaret to theatre-song; 3) the live concert (pop or rock) as a specific form of entertainment and collective performance.

Didactic methods

The teaching will be based on lectures, during which the teacher will try to stimulate dialogue and active interaction with the students. Some lessons will make use of the vision of filmic passages and theatrical videos.

Learning assessment procedures

Students' competences will be verified through an oral examination.

Evaluation criteria

The evaluation will take into account the following elements:
knowledge of the course contents;
ability to express oneself clearly, logically and using an appropriate terminology;
ability of personal re-elaboration of the topics;
ability of historical and aesthetic contextualization of the topics.
