Period

Program
The course aims to provide students with sociological tools with which to analyze publishing and journalism, as social institutions, occupational fields and technological forces. At the end of the course the students will have acquired the conceptual and methodological bases to be able to interpret the world of publishing and journalism as a social practice, as a socio-political field and as a profession, in continuous evolution with respect to environmental technologies. digital. They will also be able to apply the knowledge acquired to concrete cases that will be suggested and analyzed during the course. The course will unfold between theories, actors and social practices. In particular, the following will be illustrated: - the main concepts of the sociology of communication useful for reading the publishing and journalistic field; - methods of analysis and expression in publishing with both historical and epistemological relationships between social sciences, publishing and journalism; - editorial and journalistic forms and practices in Italy and in the world. In terms of contents, the course will be tripartite. In the first part of the course, we will illustrate the basic concepts that frame book and journalistic news within the communication sector and suggest interpretative concepts of the human and social sciences. In particular: - Actors, mechanisms and models; - Norms and values (to guide the fields of publishing and journalism from within and without). In the second part of the course, we will focus on the book with its appearance subordinated to writing and the invention of printing. In particular: - The book as a cultural object: from rare and "powerful" to cultural product or commodity and still today one of the mass media with alternating fortunes; - The world of publishing as an occupational field and as a place to observe two social processes that also act in other spheres of the social world, namely social differentiation and the social division of labor. In the third part of the course, the focus will be on journalistic reporting as an intellectual field and as the "engine" of the communicative space and the public sphere. In particular: - Proximity and distance between sociology and the practice of journalism (the methods and epistemological aims of the research); - Ambiguous and fruitful relationships between journalism and literature.
Bibliography
Didactic methods
The lessons will be mainly frontal, however discussion in class will be encouraged using various multimedia tools, such as:
- Slides projected in the classroom;
- Use of multimedia materials on the web or in repositories (institutional sites and social media);
- Use of a discussion space dedicated to the exam on the University website.
Further bibliographic material will be provided in the moodle space, especially for the benefit of those who do not attend.
Learning assessment procedures
Two methods of examination are proposed. 1. Method with final written exam: Production of a written text for each of the three open questions, starting from the texts recommended in the bibliography, the lessons (slides) and any supporting materials. 2. Modality with oral presentation and final written paper: Students who follow the course with a certain regularity can choose this exam mode for which they will have to: a) give an oral presentation, supporting themselves with slides (it will be indicated a space during the course); and b) write a paper of 3000-4000 words (including notes, figures and bibliographic references) to be sent to the teacher, within the time agreed at the beginning of the course. The topic of the presentation and of the paper will be defined with the teacher, based on the topics addressed in class and will be a critical reworking of the recommended bibliography, of the course contents and of any ad hoc bibliography. Specific indications will be provided by the teacher for presentation and papers.
Evaluation criteria
For modality 1 (final written exam), each answer will be evaluated up to 10 points, divided as follows: a) 2 points for accuracy of the topics covered; b) 3 points for clarity, completeness and articulation of the exposition; c) 2 points for the ability to critically synthesize the themes; d) 2 points for the lexicon property; e) 1 point for calligraphic clarity and spelling accuracy. The final evaluation will be out of thirty. For modality 2 (oral presentation and final written paper), the oral presentation will constitute a brief presentation of the topics addressed in the written and will be evaluated on the basis of a positive, negative judgment. The final paper will be assessed on the basis of the completeness and clarity of the presentation, as well as the original critical ability to address the proposed themes. The final evaluation will be out of thirty.
