Academic calendar
The academic calendar shows the deadlines and scheduled events that are relevant to students, teaching and technical-administrative staff of the University. Public holidays and University closures are also indicated. The academic year normally begins on 1 October each year and ends on 30 September of the following year.

Prerequisites and basic notions
No specific knowledge that could be a hindrance to understanding the content presented during the course is required. However, given the topics covered, some familiarity with economic and political history, the history of ideas, art history, and geography can be helpful for a more effective comprehension of the course.
Program
1. Definition of the concepts of economic development and economic growth. Economic development as a cultural phenomenon. From J. Huizinga to Robert J. Barro.
2. Wealth production and the pursuit of eternal life in the Middle Ages. The resulting social and economic organization.
3. Utopia and social organization: some relevant cases from the 19th and 20th centuries. Soviet communism and in other countries: a closed experiment?
4. The role of inclusive economic and political institutions as determinants of economic growth in nations (Great Britain, USA, Japan, Western Europe).
5. The role of extractive economic and political institutions as determinants of the failure and stagnation of nations (Mexico, Russia, China).
6. Development of civilizations and culture: some paradigmatic examples in the South American region.
7. Economic development in Eastern countries. The models of China, Japan, and Korea.
8. Bourgeois values, from Sombart to McCloskey.
9. The industrial development model of Verona and that of the rest of Veneto. Major differences in regional economic development in Italy.
10. The economic development model of SMEs and its consequences for the local area and investments.
11. Environmental issues of economic growth. The theories of degrowth. Sustainability and economic balance.

Didactic methods
It is important to attend the course regularly, considering that the teaching methodology does not consist of a mere repetition of notions to be learned for passing the exam, but in the presentation of a critical approach to economic development through significant cases. Attending related courses and supporting educational activities is highly recommended.
Learning assessment procedures
The examination is conducted orally.
Points of discussion include the methodology for understanding economic development, as presented in the lectures and in the examination texts.
The student will then individually discuss a topic of their choice from the History of Economic and Territorial Development, agreed upon with the instructor and presented in a written report of at least 10-12 typed pages.
Evaluation criteria
Demonstrating personal critical interpretative abilities represents the most significant evaluation criterion.
Consistency in active participation is, of course, an element that is highly regarded.

CONTAMINATION LAB
The Contamination Lab Verona (CLab Verona) is an experiential course with modules on innovation and enterprise culture that offers the opportunity to work in teams with students from all areas to solve challenges set by companies and organisations.
Upon completion of a CLab, students will be entitled to receive 6 CFU (D- or F-type credits).

PLEASE NOTE: In order to be admitted to any teaching activities, including those of your choice, you must be enrolled in the academic year in which the activities in question are offered. Students who are about to graduate in the December and April sessions are therefore advised NOT to undertake extracurricular activities in the new academic year in which they are not enrolled, as these graduation sessions are valid for students enrolled in the previous academic year. Therefore, students who undertake an activity in an academic year in which they are not enrolled will not be granted CFU credits.

Linguistic training CLA
Graduation
The final exam consists of a paper in written form of at least 80 pages, exploring a topic of the student's choice relating to one of the subjects in the student's syllabus. The topic and title of the paper must be selected in agreement with a university lecturer from one of the SSDs included in the student's syllabus. The work must be developed under the guidance of the lecturer. The thesis is the subject of an oral presentation and discussion in front of a Degree Committee on one of the dates established explicitly in the calendar of teaching activities. In agreement with the Supervisor, the thesis may be written, and the discussion may take place in English.

Internships
The curriculum of the three-year degree courses (CdL) and master's degree courses (CdLM) in the economics area includes an internship as a compulsory training activity. Indeed, the internship is considered an appropriate tool for acquiring professional skills and abilities and for facilitating the choice of a future professional outlet that aligns with one's expectations, aptitudes, and aspirations. The student can acquire further competencies and interpersonal skills through practical experience in a work environment.

Modalità di frequenza, erogazione della didattica e sedi
Le lezioni di tutti gli insegnamenti del corso di studio, così come le relative prove d’esame, si svolgono in presenza.
Peraltro, come ulteriore servizio agli studenti, è altresì previsto che tali lezioni siano registrate e che le registrazioni vengano messe a disposizione sui relativi moodle degli insegnamenti, salvo diversa comunicazione del singolo docente.
La frequenza non è obbligatoria.
