Learning objectives

The course gives an introduction to the main issues pertaining the management of Insurance Companies, aiming at providing the students with the methodologies useful to understand their management. Specifically, the following topics will be deepened: why Insurance Companies exits, the different products and services offered by Insurance Companies and the distribution channels, the specificities of the management of Insurance Companies, the logics behind the determination of the insurance premium, the technical provisions and the investment policies, risks, regulation, the bancassurance industry and financial conglomerates and the evolution of the Italian and European insurance markets.

Program

1. Economics of insurance: risk and insurance. Introduction to risk management of pure risks and transferring risks to insurers. Insurable risks and insurance mutual principle. The concept of expected and unexpected loss.
2. Demand for insurance protection. The insurance contract and the different types of products offered: non-life and life products.
3. Pricing in non-life and life insurance: Risk premium, claim frequency and loss severity. Technical basis (actuarial assumptions, financial assumptions), expenses and expense-loaded premium; single premiums and periodic premiums.
4. The distribution of insurance services: the agency channel, insurance brokers, bank branches and licensed financial advisors, direct sales, innovative forms of distribution. The Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD).
5. Organization of insurance companies and relations between banks and insurance companies. Financial Conglomerates.
6. Management of insurance companies: the financial intermediation of insurers, the inverted economic cycle. The underwriting and risk management process. The claims settlement. The asset management of insurers.
7. Technical provisions: reserving in life insurance and technical reserves in non-life insurance.
8. The risks faced by an insurance company. The actuarial risk and the financial risk. Classical and innovative reinsurance (ART). Co-insurance.
9. Insurance regulation and supervision. Regulatory framework. Prudential supervision and Solvency II. Insolvency of insurance companies.
10. Introduction to management control and the reporting system of an insurance company.
11. The insurance market: recent trends.

Didactic methods

The course will be made up of frontal lessons held by the teachers along with expert testimonials, who will present their diverse experience in the insurance sector.
At the beginning of the course, students will be provided with the timetable that will evidence the time and room for each lesson.
Additional materials will be made available on the e-learning page of the course.
Both course books and additional materials are consistent with course objectives and syllabus

Learning assessment procedures

The exam will be held in written form and consists in 5 open questions to be answered in 120 min. The exam will focus on the whole course program and and students may also be asked to carry out exercises.
Further information will be given on the e-learning platform.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The exam aims at evaluating both knowledge about insurance companies management and students’ capabilities to critically assess dynamics and complexities of insurance activity.
Each question is assessed with a range 0 to 6 points.

Nei piani didattici di ciascun Corso di studio è previsto l’obbligo di conseguire un certo numero di crediti formativi mediante attività a scelta (chiamate anche "di tipologia D e F").

Oltre che in insegnamenti previsti nei piani didattici di altri corsi di studio e in certificazioni linguistiche o informatiche secondo quanto specificato nei regolamenti di ciascun corso, tali attività possono consistere anche in iniziative extracurriculari di contenuto vario, quali ad esempio la partecipazione a un seminario o a un ciclo di seminari, la frequenza di laboratori didattici, lo svolgimento di project work, stage aggiuntivo, eccetera.

Come per ogni altra attività a scelta, è necessario che anche queste non costituiscano un duplicato di conoscenze e competenze già acquisite dallo studente.

Quelle elencate in questa pagina sono le iniziative extracurriculari che sono state approvate dalla Commissione didattica e quindi consentono a chi vi partecipa l'acquisizione dei CFU specificati, alle condizioni riportate nelle pagine di dettaglio di ciascuna iniziativa.

Si ricorda in proposito che:
- tutte queste iniziative richiedono, per l'acquisizione dei relativi CFU, il superamento di una prova di verifica delle competenze acquisite, secondo le indicazioni contenute nella sezione "Modalità d'esame" della singola attività;
- lo studente è tenuto a inserire nel proprio piano degli studi l'attività prescelta e a iscriversi all'appello appositamente creato per la verbalizzazione, la cui data viene stabilita dal docente di riferimento e pubblicata nella sezione "Modalità d'esame" della singola attività.

ATTENZIONE: Per essere ammessi a sostenere una qualsiasi attività didattica, incluse quelle a scelta, è necessario essere iscritti all'anno di corso in cui essa viene offerta. Si raccomanda, pertanto, ai laureandi delle sessioni di dicembre e aprile di NON svolgere attività extracurriculari del nuovo anno accademico, cui loro non risultano iscritti, essendo tali sessioni di laurea con validità riferita all'anno accademico precedente. Quindi, per attività svolte in un anno accademico cui non si è iscritti, non si potrà dar luogo a riconoscimento di CFU.
