Learning objectives

At the end of the course the students will be able to: Recognize and classify the main groups of plants, interpreting their main structures and differences as the result of the evolution; recognize the various plant organs, interpreting their macroscopic and microscopic structure as the result of a process of development and differentiation; understand the differences between the various reproductive strategies of plants, describing them from the evolutionary point of view; apply the acquired knowledge to plant improvement processes through biotechnological approaches; be able to look for reliable sources for the deepening of the various topics; acquire an appropriate language.

Prerequisites and basic notions

-knowledge of basic biology

Program

1) Structure and development of the vegetative body of the plant
A) Evolution of plant body
B) Structure and development of Angiosperm embryo;
C) Shoot apical meristem and differentiation of stem primary structure;
D) Secondary structure in Gymnosperm and Angiosperm;
E) The lateral organs of the shoot: simple and compound leaves;
F) The root apical meristem, differentiation of primary and secondary root, lateral root development
2) Life cycles and reproductive mechanisms of plants
A) Evolution of plant life cycle and relevance of sporophyte and gametophyte in the main plant taxa
B) Phase transition, development and structure of inflorescence and flowers
C) Pollen and embryo sac development in the Angiosperms;
D) Pollination and gamic events;
E) Structure, development and evolution of dry and fleshy fruits;
F) Structure, development and evolution of seeds.

Didactic methods

-Theoretical and practical frontal lessons, the latter concerning the recognition of anatomical structures of plants, also through the use of the optical microscope

Learning assessment procedures

The examination will be an oral test aimed to verify :
-the overall degree of knowledge of the subject of this course;
-the scientific language skills.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

Knowledge and depth of the subject developed in the course of study; ability to use a language appropriate to the subject in question.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

- average of the marks of the individual questions
