The academic calendar shows the deadlines and scheduled events that are relevant to students, teaching and technical-administrative staff of the University. Learning outcomes
The module “General Viticulture” provides the basics of grapevine cultivation. This knowledge is useful for an appropriate learning of the information imparted in the lectures of the modules “Viticultural Ecology and Physiology” and “Viticultural Techniques”.
The module "General Viticulture" addresses the issues that concerns grapevine taxonomy and Vitis vinifera morphology and phenology. Moreover, the module describes the main breeding methods, the activities conducted in nursery and the methods for the characterization of grapevine varieties. Finally, it describes berry compounds and their evolution during ripening.
Program
Taxonomy of the genus Vitis. Characteristics of the main species of the genus Vitis and their utilization. Grapevine morphology. Description of the bud cycle (vegetative and reproductive sub-cycle) and of the phenology. Breeding of grapevine: interspecific and intraspecific crosses. Resistant varieties and rootstocks. Clonal and massal selection. Vine propagation: activities conducted in nursery for the production of grafted vines. Ampelografy, ampelometry and molecular methods to characterize Vitis vinifera cultivars. Cluster morphology and classification of berry compounds. History of grapevine cultivation and its spread and distribution throughout the world. The main black, grey and white varieties and their characteristics.

Examination Methods
Module General Viticulture. The exam is oral and its aim is to assess the knowledge of the subjects listed in the course program. Students are evaluated upon the deepening of the knowledge, the ability to elaborate connections between different subjects and the ability to use the correct scientific and technical terminology. The final vote will be expressed out of a maximum of 30 points.
