Learning outcomes

The main objective of this part of the course is to cover the multiple aspects of the soil and water reclamation by plants (phytoremediation) for decontamination of sites polluted by inorganic and organic compounds. Biotechnological applications will be deeply considered.

Program

Lectures will consider: causes of environmental pollution by heavy metals and organic compounds. Reclamation processes: physic-chemical and biological methods. Plant utilization for the in situ treatment of contaminated soils, waters and sediments. Study of plant metal hyperaccumulators. Different processes of phytoremediation: phyto- degradation, extraction, volatilization, stabilization and stimulation. The role of plant-microbe interaction in phytoremediation processes. Analysis of chelating compounds, transporters, enzymes involved in tolerance and sequestration of toxic compounds in plant. Utilization of transgenic plants for the reclamation of polluted sites. Case study for the phytovolatilization of selenium and mercury. Advantages and limitations of phytoremediation processes. Biomonitoring of environmental pollution: test available, methods and applications.
