Learning outcomes

The course focuses on two aspects of the Russian language: its morphology and syntax, and its linguistic variations. During the course, a sample of Russian texts characterised by a variety of linguistic registers will be read, analysed and translated. Several translation techniques and strategies will also be explained and implemented. At the end of course, students will be able to: 1) demonstrate to have the Russian language skills that correspond to the C2 level of the CEFR; 2) apply the acquired knowledge in an in-depth analysis of complex texts characterised by different registers, preferring the ones that belong to the business and socio-political sphere (LM38), and to the literary or linguistic-didactic sphere (LM37); 3) develop their own personal and coherent opinion on the linguistic issues studied in the course.

Program

The course focusses on the most important phenomena in today's Russian language; the present changes will be illustrated in the light of the dissolution of the rigid language regulations. Text reading and analysis will be conducted on a variety of stylistic registers: contemporary literary works, newspaper articles, documents of political and economic nature, social network. Some sectorial languages will be taken in examination. A final remark will discuss the status and role of the Russian language within and outside the Russian Federation.

PART 2
- The Russian language and minority languages in the Russian Federation
- The Russian language in the post-soviet area
- The Russian language outside the Russian Federation
- Etiquette and commercial language (with deepening for the degree course LM38)
- Relations between Russian and English languages, influence of globalization
- Gender and feminitivy

Teaching methods consists of lectures and group works delivered as seminars.
The students will be provided with a choice of critical readings.

Students are required to
1. demonstrate the knowledge of the topics dealt with during the course
2. analyse one text among those studied and translated during the course in addition to the text chosen and analysed for the exam autonomously
