Learning outcomes

The course aims to introduce students of medicine to the approaches adopted by social sciences in the study of health, disease and medicine. The course also aims to offer a broad look at the topics in question, to guide participants to consider that health and illness are issues that can be read in different cultural matrices and from both microsocial and microsocial viewpoints.

Program

Health models/paradigms in Sociology (capacity to fulfill social roles and disease as deviance, health as inequality, subjectivity perspective, health as adaptation and Disability Paradox, Health Related Stigma).
Socio-anthropological dimensions of health: Disease / Illness / Sickness
Social determinants of health
Interactions between culture and health and between culture and illness.

Examination Methods

The exam will be written. The test will consist of pre-arranged questions and questions with short open / narrative responses. The questions will be relevant to the topics of the lessons and texts indicated in the program. The review looks at: the understanding of the main concepts dealt with in the course; the ability to critically analyze the themes proposed in lesson.
