Learning outcomes
The course recalls the main stages of the history of pharmacology, providing examples and curiosities, and analyzing the role of drugs on population health. The course will end with a lecture on the future trends of pharmacology research.

-The pharmacological knowledge in ancient civilizations: Egyptian, Chinese, Mesopotamian, Indian, Jewish, Roman, Greek
-The Role of Catholicism in both the destruction and the preservation of pharmacological knowledge
-The Middle Ages
-The Arabian medical schools: their role in pharmacology
-Paracelsus and the first steps of chemistry
-The advent of the printing press: the first interdisciplinary therapeutic form
-History of smallpox and subsequent vaccinations, with particular reference to polio vaccine
-The Father of Pharmacology: Paul Erlich
-History of the discovery of morphine and cocaine
-History of anesthetics
-History of penicillin
-History of aspirin
-History of the contraceptive pill
-The future of Pharmacology: target therapy and individualized therapy
