Learning outcomes

At the end of the Medical internship the student should be able to:
- collect a complete, accurate and differentiated medical history tailored according to the kind of patient;
- perform a complete physical exam to identify the signs of the main diseases;
- integrate the data obtained from medical history and physical exam to formulate consistent diagnostic hypotheses and to request the execution of the most relevant tests to obtain the correct diagnosis;
- establish the appropriate medical therapy for the different pathologies and according to patient characteristics;
- schedule and manage patient follow-up.

Program

The student will attend one division of Internal Medicine for a 8-weeks period, according to the established shifts. The tutor will certify, on the specific booklet, the student’s daily and hourly frequency for the foreseen period. The booklet will also indicate all the practical activities carried out by the student under the supervision of the tutor. The booklet must be picked up by the student at the secretary's office of the School of Medicine and Surgery, after signing a declaration that she/he passed all the fundamental exams for the first 4 years of the course. An indispensable pre-requisite for accessing the evaluation of the internship is a certified minimum attendance of 100 hours. There is no specific pre-defined program as the training objectives will be achieved by cooperating with the tutor during the daily clinical activity.

Bibliography

Visualizza la bibliografia con Leganto, strumento che il Sistema Bibliotecario mette a disposizione per recuperare i testi in programma d'esame in modo semplice e innovativo.

Examination Methods

There is no single formal exam. The student will be assessed during the entire internship in particular taking into consideration all the aspects present on the last page of the specific booklet that explore his medical skills, his professionalism and his ability to interact with the patient and the others healthcare employees in the hospital. The tutor will express his own evaluation, for each of the training objectives, using the following letters: A corresponding to very excellent; B excellent; C good; D satisfactory; E sufficient; F insufficient. The final evaluation will be expressed, jointly by the tutor and the head of the department, in terms of: "adequate" or "inadequate". Only if the student is considered “adequate” she/he will gain access to the exam of qualification to the profession of physician-surgeon, if considered “inadequate” the student will have to repeat the internship.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE
