Learning outcomes
The present course aims at providing students of medicine and surgery with the necessary specific linguistic competences and structures to comprehend and produce written and spoken medical-scientific texts. For this reason, special attention will be paid to the lexical, syntactic and pragmatic aspects of the English language in the medical and academic fields
Program
The course (total 24 hours) focuses on the analysis and comprehension of diverse medical texts and on conversational contexts in English both between physicians and patients and among medical professionals. Each lesson in class deals with a specific topic and the related distinctive traits that are typical of British and American medical institutions. The language and phraseology of oral and written academic English in the medical field will also be studied. The lessons consist in an explanation on the main topic and related exercises in class with extra information and in-depth explanations where needed.
Examination Methods
The final exam consists in a written exam composed of diverse theoretical questions and applicative exercises that are based on the notions and the exercises dealt with during lessons in class and at home. The final grade is expressed in thirtieths.
