Learning objectives

Upon completion of the course, the student will acquire knowledge of the technological fundamentals of pharmaceutical dosage forms used in therapy.

Prerequisites and basic notions

For effective training, it is recommended to attend the course after having completed the Pharmacology courses and the elective course: The Medicinal Product: Elements of Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

Program

The course “The Medicinal Product: The Dosage Form” aims to provide students with theoretical knowledge of the medicinal product understood as a dispersed system of the active ingredient within the excipients, in order to develop the skills needed to choose the appropriate dosage form for therapeutic purposes.
Specifically, the program includes the following topics:
- Definition of Drug, Medicinal Product, and Dosage Form;
- Liquid dispersed systems: solutions, suspensions, and emulsions;
- Oral dosage forms;
- Topical dosage forms;
- Dosage forms for the respiratory system.

Didactic methods

Teaching is structured through lectures (8 hours). The lectures, held in the classroom using PowerPoint presentations, provide basic knowledge of the characteristics and technical requirements of the various pharmaceutical forms and the raw materials they contain. Learning is encouraged through ongoing student involvement, discussing the implications of the proposed topics for professional practice.
