Learning objectives

Particular attention will be paid to the interpretation of laboratory tests that affect the diagnosis of the main nephrological, endocrinological, oncological and hematological pathologies, discussing some clinical cases. The appropriate methodology in the collection and processing phase of biological samples; The pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical variables that can influence the reliability of laboratory results.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Knowledge of biochemistry, physiology, immunology and pathophysiology. Knowledge relating to pathophysiology with particular attention to:  alterations of the hydro-electrolyte balance;  alterations in the acid-base balance;  alterations in renal function;  alterations in cardiac function;  the regulation of vascular tone and alterations in blood pressure homeostasis;  alterations in respiratory function and hypoxia;  alterations in liver function;  alterations of haemostasis and thrombosis;

Program

In this elective course the following will be taken into consideration: 1. The role of Laboratory Medicine in the diagnostic process and monitoring of pathologies and drugs. Particular attention will be paid to the interpretation of laboratory tests that affect the diagnosis of the main nephrological, endocrinological, oncological and hematological pathologies, discussing some clinical cases. 2. The appropriate methodology in the collection and processing phase of biological samples; 3. The pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical variables that can influence the reliability of laboratory results.
