Learning objectives

The general educational goals of the course are planned to cover principles, methods, tools and functions of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. In this vision, all the major subjects of Community Medicine are discussed, including public health, occupational health, ethics, deontology and legal and forensic medicine. The course aims at offering to the students adequate knowledge of management, organization, and practice in different medical activities, such as health care, prevention, individual and environmental risk assessment and management, measurement of assistance quality, health service organization, cost evaluation of health service, diagnosis of occupational diseases, occupational injuries, environmental and biological monitoring of occupational risks, psychological and ergonomic assessment of work conditions, industrial toxicology. HYGIENE Transmission models and strategies of direct and indirect prophylaxis of diffusive infectious diseases (in particular immunoprophylaxis and chemoprophylaxis) FORENSIC MEDICINE The Course of Medicine is intended to help the student to develop a "forma mentis" considering the medical activity not only as a "technical" contribution to the maintenance and recovery of people's health, but also as a human activity part of the social context with specific legal, economic, ethical and psychologica peculiarities, where the MD fully plays an irreplaceable role. Alongside this general objective, the teaching of Legal Medicine aims at offering to the future medical practitioners the fundamentl principles of general legal medicine, toxicology, thanatology and forensic genetics as well as legal, bioethical and ethical competencies to properly address specific aspects of the profession, including the problems of medical professional malpractice and responsibility. OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE To acquire knowledge and understanding, also thorough field examples, about: - general principles of occupational medicine and health and safety in workplaces - principal clinic-epidemiological features on occupational injuries and work related diseases and disorders - roles of the different professionals and institutions committed to prevention. - occupational health clinic, with specific reference to occupational history collection, etiological diagnosis, medico-legal obligations, cooperation among health professionals and physicians (general practitioners as well as specialists), in order to achieve etiological diagnosis - legislation on health and safety at work - exposure and risk assessment, health surveillance, individual susceptibility, vulnerable groups, fitness for work - primary, secondary, tertiary prevention, with reference to different risk factors (e.g., chemicals, physical agents, biohazards, ergonomics, organization and psychosocial factors)

Prerequisites and basic notions

Knowledge of basic sciences. Knowledge of biological and pathophysiological fundamentals of diseases. Knowledge of semeiotics and clinical methodology.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

Arithmetic average of the marks obtained in the individual modules.
NOTATION: to be admitted to the exam, the % of the lessons established by the rules and by the teacher, must be reached in every module. The attendance at each lesson is assessed by each teacher. The Commission could, in specific circumstances, prescribe recovery work (e.g., a short thesis) in order to register to the examn; the topic will be communicated to the student, who must send the work to the teacher at least 7 days before the exam the student will register.
