Learning objectives

At the end of the run of study of the systematic pathology, the student must know the anatomo-pathological features that characterize the macroscopic, cytological, histological and molecular lesions of the principal diseases of all organs. He must be able to correlate the pathological alterations with the presentation of the disease, with signs and clinical symptoms and with clinical course of the disease and to find the rational for the diagnostic and prognostic evaluations and for the therapeutic (local and systemic therapies) decisions.

Oncogenesis and main mechanisms involved in the development of neoplasms.
Classification of neoplasms, grading criteria, and tumor staging.
The role of pathology in the prevention and early diagnosis of oncological diseases.
Morphological aspects of acute and chronic inflammation. General and organ-specific morphological characteristics of autoimmune diseases.
Circulatory disorders in different organs: general classification criteria and fundamentals of cardiac pathology. Morphological alterations of organs associated with transplant rejection.
Clinical pathology: the Morgagni method and Rosai's surgical pathology.
Requesting histological examination and interpreting the pathology report.
Pathology diagnostic techniques: conventional histology, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, and molecular diagnostic methods.
Determination of death, diagnostic confirmation, and forensic autopsy in forensic and civil proceedings.
Indications, applications, and limitations of exfoliative cytology and fine-needle aspiration. Indications, potential, and limitations of extemporaneous histological examination on frozen section (intraoperative examination).
The role of pathology in the therapeutic decision-making process and in defining the patient's clinical path.
