Period

Semester 1 dal Oct 3, 2022 al Jan 27, 2023.

Learning objectives

The course introduces the fundamental discrete structures by emphasizing their use in the definition of mathematical models of biological relevance. The students will acquire knowledge about the es-sentials of discrete mathematics; formal notions and methods for studying problems by means of computers; methods for representation of biological information; and they will be able to apply such knowledge to analyze biological data of different types (genomic sequences, biological processes, networks of biological interactions) by means of information theoretic concepts.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Basic knowledge (offered in the first year) of mathematics and programming.

Program

The course intends to present fundamental discrete structures, with an emphasis on their role in the definition of mathematical models of biological relevance. At the end of the course, students will acquire knowledge of the fundamentals of discrete mathematics; basic notions and formal tools for the study of computer-treatable problems; and methods of representing information in the biological field.

Bibliography

Didactic methods

Learning assessment procedures

The exam consists of a written test with both open and closed questions, and an optional oral test, to be held only if the written exam is sufficient.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The exercises are aimed at verifying both the understanding of the topics presented during the course and the ability to apply the techniques and analytical tools presented even in contexts not directly covered in the course. The oral exam verifies the student's critical ability, and his ability to communicate the acquired knowledge with an appropriate technical language.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final mark is given by the mark of the written exam, or optionally, by an adjustment of this according to the evaluation of the oral exam.

Exam language

Type D and Type F activities

3. Competenze trasversali

Solo in seguito all'ottenimento dell'Open Badge verranno automaticamente convalidati i CFU a libretto.
