Learning objectives

The course introduces the fundamental discrete structures by emphasizing their use in the definition of mathematical models of biological relevance. The students will acquire knowledge about the es-sentials of discrete mathematics; formal notions and methods for studying problems by means of computers; methods for representation of biological information; and they will be able to apply such knowledge to analyze biological data of different types (genomic sequences, biological processes, networks of biological interactions) by means of information theoretic concepts.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Basic knowledge of mathematics and programming is assumed as background learned by courses of the first year.

Program

The course introduces fundamental discrete structures, with an emphasis on their role in the definition of mathematical and computational models of biological relevance. At the end of the course, students will acquire knowledge of the fundamentals of discrete mathematics, basic concepts and formal tools of theory of computing, and methods to represent information in biological fields.

Didactic methods

In class and in person lectures

Learning assessment procedures

The exam consists of a written test, typically with open questions, and an optional oral test, for students who achieve a given grade threshold in the written exam.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

Exercises are aimed at verifying both the understanding of the topics explained in the course and the learning of ability to apply the techniques and analytical tools even in contexts not directly covered by the program. The optional oral exam verifies the student's critical ability to both master the acquired knowledge and communicate it with an appropriate technical language.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final mark is given by the mark of the written exam, or optionally, by an adjustment of this according to the evaluation of the oral exam.
