Learning outcomes

The course aims to introduce to students the tools and knowledge for the design, implementation and analysis of empirical research in the socio-health field and is organized in three modules:

The first module is dedicated to the logic of research, through the analysis of the main theoretical paradigms that guide research in the social sciences and the empirical translation of theories;

The second module analyses the main quantitative and qualitative research techniques. It will examine the methods and tools by which social research is conducted: the standardised questionnaire, the official statistical sources, the in-depth interviews, the participant observation, the focus group, the scale technique (with a focus on rehabilitation scales);

The third module focuses on mixed methods in empirical research in the socio-health field, with comparative analysis of several research.

Examination Methods

The exam test will take place in two parts and with two separate assessments:

Part 1: Group work (critical analysis of empirical research in the socio-health field), programmed for the last lesson of the Course
The practical exercise (group work) will allow a first socialization to empirical research. The tutorial presents itself as an added value, which helps to overcome the limits of a traditional course, so that knowledge is also embodied in experience (knowing vs. know-how; know versus know-how). The exercise is also useful in increasing useful skills for the future: job interviews and group trials, group coordination, exhibition skills, group work, etc. that are often required in large organisations;

Part 2: Individual written test on the concepts and themes presented during the Course

The final vote will be calculated as an average of the outcome of the first and second tests.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE
