Learning outcomes
The course is aimed at offering the basic competences for conducting research in the organizational field with attention paid to the study of healthcare contexts. In the first part of the course, starting from general conceptualizations on the epistemology of social sciences, the main differences between qualitative, quantitative and mixed approaches will be analyzed and the main factors to be considered in choosing the research methodology will be discussed. Subsequently, the main approaches to organizational analysis aimed at supporting organizational change (e.g. case study, action research.) and the main data collection techniques of qualitative research will be introduced (e.g. ethnography and participant observation, discursive interviews, focus group). Finally, the data analysis process will be discussed. At the end of the course, the student will be able to evaluate which approaches and methodological tools best allow access to the field of investigation and answer the research questions, and will also acquire the necessary skills to independently conduct organizational empirical analysis activities.
Program
The course is structured as follows.
First part:
- Introduction to the concept of organization in sociology
- Qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods approaches in organization studies
- The research design
Second part:
- Approaches to organizational analysis aimed at supporting organizational change
- Data collection techniques in qualitative research
- The process of analyzing the empirical documentation
During the course, materials of empirical studies will also be provided to better link the theoretical concepts to the methodological aspects of empirical research carried out in organizational contexts, and where possible group exercises will be carried out.
Bibliography
Examination Methods
The evaluation will be carried out through an oral exam.
