Learning outcomes

Main goals:
1. introduction to the vocabulary about Scientific English;
2. development of the four main skills: Speaking, listening, reading, writing) focusing especially on the reading ability;
3. consolidation of the English grammar and vocabulary;
4. strengthening the ability of translation from English into Italian

The level of the Scientific English Course is: intermediate-advanced
Prior to follow the course students are requested to have at least a B1 level

Program

Lexis:
1. The nurse: the profession of nursing, the nurse’s job, the nurse’s instruments
2. The doctor: the General Practitioner, the doctor’s job, specialists, the doctor’s tools
3. The hospital: hospital divisions, the hospital staff, the hospital room, types of patients
4. The human body: external body parts, common disorders related to some external parts, some idioms related to the parts of the body
5. The five senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste, common disorders of senses, specialists
6. Food and diet: the healthy diet pyramid, meals, kinds of diet, components of a balanced diet, food rich in carbohydrates, food rich in proteins, food rich in vitamins and minerals, food rich in fats and oils, drinks, eating disorders and their consequences, types of nutrition, specialists
7. Body systems: a. The skeletal system, pathologies of the skeletal system
b. The muscular system, pathologies of the muscular system
c. The nervous system, pathologies of the nervous system
d. The cardiovascular system, pathologies of the cardiovascular system

Oral discussion (reading and translation based on texts and powerpoint presentations analyzed during the lessons).
