Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to teach the basic concepts of anesthetic practices such as general anesthesia, regional loco and sedation in general and specialized surgical procedures, with their modalities of execution, the possible side effects and complications and the concepts of anesthesiological risk. The basic concepts on pathophysiology and pain therapy are also discussed, with particular regard to acute postoperative pain and the techniques for its treatment (epidural analgesia, intravenous analgesia and PCA techniques).

Physiology and pathophysiology of pain transmission with particular reference to treatment with analgesic drugs and their effect
Peridural and Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) and new guidelines for the treatment of incident pain
Types of anesthesia: general and regional anesthesia, nerve blocks
Assessment of anesthesiological risk (ASA classification)
General Anesthesia: from induction to awakening
Specific drugs for general and peripheral anesthesia (neuro-muscular blocking agents, hypnotics, relaxant)
The awakening from anesthesia: monitoring and discharge criteria
