Learning objectives
The course aims to provide the student with technical-practical, relational, problem-solving and organizational skills in safe setting, before clinical practice in clinical environment with patients, in order to reduce the emotional impact that comes from real situations and guarantee ethicality and safety to patients. For these reasons this course represents a prerequisite for the clinical practice. It also offers to student the opportunity to train himself in applying the theoretical principles to practice situations. The main skills of the first year of the Bachelor Degree are: measuring vital parameters, hand hygiene, choice and use of personal protective equipment (PPE), setting up a sterile field, staging and treatment of a pressure injury , take care of the person's body, apply the principles of ergonomics, carry out the person's positioning / transfer and assisted positioning maneuvers, assessment skills and objective examination.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Knowledge of the physiology of tissue repair;
Knowledge of the surgical wound dressing renewal procedure per primam intenitonem;
Knowledge of the types of surgical and non-surgical drainage; Knowledge of drained material;
Knowledge on the prevention of SSi
Program
Practical session: 1. Introduction (10 min): • Brief review of the theory regarding the surgical dressing and the different types of drainage. • Listing of the practical objectives of the laboratory. 2. Practical demonstration (15 min): • Show a correct surgical dressing change procedure when healing by primary intention. • Illustrate the identification of different types of drainage and drained material. 3. Practical exercise - Part 1: Changing the surgical dressing (30 min): • Students will work in pairs. • Each couple will have a mannequin or a simulation of a surgical wound available. • Guided by the tutor, they will practice changing the surgical dressing when healing by primary intention. • The tutor will provide immediate feedback and correct any errors. 4. Practical exercise - Part 2: Drainage recognition (30 min): • Students will work in pairs. • Different types of drainage and samples of drained material (for example, colored physiological serum) will be shown. • Students will identify the type of drainage and the drained material presented. • The tutor will provide feedback and explain the key characteristics of each drainage type. 5. Final discussion (15 min): • Summary of the skills learned during the laboratory. • Answer students' questions and discuss any unclear points.
