Learning outcomes
Students will acquire/improve their ability to understand and produce ¬both written and oral texts about nursing practice. Particular attention will be given to the lexical, syntactic, phonological and pragmatic aspects of medical English.
Program
Analysis of scientific English vocabulary using frontal teaching and groupwork, enabling students to learn the typical vocabulary and grammatical structures of nursing English articles, focusing on a critical analysis and creating a summary of the main points.
1st part: Testing and introduction to the reading of scientific texts (using short articles about cystic fibrosis, swab counts, blood pressure monitors, heart patients)
2nd part: Reading and analysis of an assortment of scientific articles ('Student nurses' experience of caring for patients in pain', 'Effectiveness of sleep management strategies for the elderly', 'geriatric patients' preferences for trearment of urinary incontinence' etc.
3rd part: Revision and mock exam
