Learning outcomes

The course is proposed to provide cultural bases in order to promote, protect and sustain breastfeeding
Students can learn to apply the knowledges of the physiology of lactation, in order to sustain the start and the maintenance of breastfeeding, and they will be able to describe special situation about the mother and the baby, that can have an impact on breastfeeding.
On completion of this course, the participant is expected to be able to:
- use communication skills to talk with pregnant women, mothers and co-workers;
- practice the 10 end 7 Steps of the initiative “INSIEME PER L?ALLATTAMENTO- ospedali e comunità amici dei bambini” end the Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative
- describe it so you can protect breastfeeding by knowing the spirit by the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes and applying his indications
- discuss with a woman the importance of breastfeeding and outline practices that support the initiation of breastfeeding;
- facilitate skin-to-skin contact and early initiation of breastfeeding;
- assist a mother to learn the skills of positioning and attaching her baby as well as the skill of hand expression;
- discuss with a mother how to find support for breastfeeding after she returns home;
- outline what needs to be discussed with a women who is not breastfeeding and know to whom to refer this woman for further assistance with feeding her baby;
- identify practices that support and those that interfere with breastfeeding;
- work with co-workers to highlight barriers to breastfeeding and seek ways to overcome those barriers.
The contents of this course are connected with "obstetric care at childbirth and puerperium" (to understand how obstetric practices during the labor can influence the possibility to breastfeed)
