Learning objectives

The course aims to provide basic knowledge on the storage and management of health data and on how to find information from bibliographic databases, to acquire the fundamental notions in the epidemiological field and to reflect on psychometric evaluation, knowing how to develop critical thinking in the use of tests in clinical practice. MODULE APPLIED COMPUTER SCIENCE The course aims to provide students with basic knowledge on how a computer works and on the storage and management of health data. Students will use the spreadsheet to summarize and represent data and will find information from bibliographic databases. MODULE PSYCHOMETRICS The aim of the module is to understand the basic concepts of psychometrics: to become familiar with the fundamental notions of measurement in psychology (variables, measurement scales, validity, reliability); to distinguish between standardized/validated and non-standardized instruments. To acquire skills in analyzing the psychometric properties of tests and measurement instruments: to know and experiment with the techniques used in the different phases of the process of verifying the psychometric properties of a test. To acquire skills in critical reading of tests and psychometric instruments: to interpret the main psychometric indicators (e.g. Cronbach's α, correlation coefficient, standard error of measurement); to evaluate the quality and suitability of a test for use in the clinical-speech therapy field starting from the reading of validation articles. To develop critical thinking towards the use of tests in clinical practice: to reflect on the ethical and professional role of psychometric evaluation; to understand the limits of evaluation instruments, avoiding mechanical or improper use of tests. MODULE MEDICAL STATISTICS AND CLINICAL EPIDEMIOLOGY The educational path aims to make students able to: describe and interpret the information that can be drawn from a sample of data; know, calculate and interpret the main measures of frequency and association in the epidemiological field.
