Learning objectives

The course provides the basic knowledge for the study of some fundamental aspects of human language and natural languages, with particular attention to the levels of linguistic analysis. Introductory knowledge is provided for the study of phonetics and phonology; the theoretical and terminological bases for the description of the principles operating in morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics; the tools for the analysis of phenomena in a sociolinguistic key. MODULE GLOTTOLOGY AND LINGUISTICS Acquire the basic knowledge for the study of human language and natural languages, with particular attention to the concept of level of analysis. Identify general units and principles operating at the levels: morphological, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic. Recognize and interpret linguistic units from both a theoretical and an applicative point of view. MODULE SOCIOLINGUISTICS Acquire the essential theoretical bases (concepts and terminology) for the study of linguistic variability in relation to social factors. Know the dimensions of linguistic variation. Describe texts belonging to different varieties and registers. MODULE PHONETICS AND PHONOLOGY Acquire the introductory theoretical bases for the study of phonetics and phonology. Know the classification of phonemes based on manner and place of articulation. Know and use the International Phonetic Alphabet.
